The brain is a complex organ composed of extremely soft tissues with distinct mechanical properties. Instabilities in the developing brain lead to the formation of the intricate folds that characterize the surface of the human brain, but these instabilities are poorly understood even in theory, as canonical analyses of instability have often focused on soft materials only in combination with high-stiffness materials. The open questions regarding the buckling behavior of complex soft materials has applications in brain development, as well as other biological soft tissues, hydrogels, and stretchable electronics.
